A snowy February has led to an uptick in burglaries in Bridgeport, according to a Chicago Police Department community alert.

The department is warning Bridgeport residents about a string of burglaries last month in which an unknown offender entered garages and stole snow-removal equipment, among other tools.

In a community alert released Sunday, CPD officials said one or more people burglarized garages in the 9th District, which includes Bridgeport, at various hours of the day.

The affected homes were in the 2800 block of South Throop Street on Feb. 18 in the evening, the 3700 block of South Winchester Avenue on Feb. 19 in the evening, the 3600 block of South Hamilton Avenue between Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, and the 3200 block of South Hamilton Avenue on Feb. 25 in the evening.

Police officials suggest people protect themselves from burglary by keeping their homes well-lit, reporting suspicious activity, and securing or repairing windows, doors and locks.
