Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs are in a good mood right now. Enjoy it while it lasts. (US Presswire )
This is a fun time of year to be a Cubs fan and really, the only time because they haven't done anything yet to make me angry. They haven't done anything to make me happy either, but that's the Cubs.
So we have Rick Renteria and the players arriving, everybody's happy. He says he'll meet with all players individually. Oh, please, I want in on the Starlin Castro/Anthony Rizzo meetings. Here's what I'd say: "Yeah, I realize these were some awful teams, but the days of babying you guys are over. You're paid to produce and lead like stars, so if you want to stick around here, start acting like it."
Of course this year could be the arrival of Javier Baez. Only the Cubs could offer us the promise of a shortstop with the possibility of having nowhere to put him. I'd laugh except I tend to start crying.
More good news: Owner Tom Ricketts can envision the Cubs making the playoffs this season. I'll pause here to let the room stop spinning and just say of course he does.
Let's hope he sticks to the important things, like signage.
In the meantime, big one today, U.S. vs. Canada! I'll let you root for our favorite Blackhawk in that one, but I'm afraid the Hawks have been quiet over there. I didn't realize the nightlife in Sochi was that good. Come home safe, guys, and bring a stray dog with you.
Ponder that while we welcome the Bulls back for the second half of the NBA season. Yes, there was a first half! I continue to hear calls for Carmelo Anthony to come to the Bulls. Hmm. I'll say it again: He doesn't pass, doesn't play defense and is a one-dimensional player. So, yeah, on a Thibs-coached team, I like him to last about five minutes around here.
Another idea whose five minutes is up is the Bears going to a 3-4 defense. Um, no. In the name of every great middle linebacker (Singletary, Butkus, Buffone) and every great lineman (McMichael, Hampton, Dent) and anyone else, I'm happy to say the 4-3 is simply how it's done around here.
Always has been, always will be.
