Lower West Side sees 2 homicides in 1 day

The Lower West Side saw two homicides Friday, its first homicides of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.

A 22-year-old man was shot to death in the 1800 block of West 19th Street, police said. Earlier in the day, a 31-year-old man was fatally shot in the 2000 block of West 21st Street, according to officials.

The Lower West Side recorded six homicides last year, down from seven homicides in 2012, RedEye determined.

In the last week, gunshot homicides have been recorded in Auburn Gresham, Logan Square and Rogers Park, based on police information.

Three homicides have been logged so far this month. Fourteen homicides were recorded in February 2013, according to RedEye data.

January ended last week with 24 homicides, down from 44 homicides in January 2013, RedEye determined.
