Normally when the Blackhawks and Red Wings face off, the storyline is all about how much these teams hate each other. That's all well and good (bad?), but for once we thought we'd introduce some civility to this rivalry.
For example, the Hawks and Wings both will send 10 players to the Olympics next month. So who earned medals Wednesday night?
Bear with us this time. Then you can go back to hating each other.
Gold: Marian Hossa. For scoring his sixth goal in his past six games. That even got a half-smile from the normally stoic superstar.
Silver: Andrew Shaw. For sticking with a wildly bouncing puck and depositing it in the net for a 2-0 lead. His goals can be ugly, but luckily they count the same.
Bronze: Henrik Zetterberg. For not punching Pierre McGuire in the face for referring to him in the third person in their pregame conversation. That’s impressive restraint.
Score: Blackhawks 2, Red Wings 2
Gold: Gustav Nyquist. A goal and an assist for the 24-year-old Red Wings forward in the second period. The Hawks aren’t about stand for that, are they?
Silver: Patrick Sharp. For blasting one home to make it 3-2. He’s rockin’ the clean-shaven look for this contest. Beard or no beard, that’s one handsome man.
Bronze: The goalpost. The Hawks penalty kill owes this stand-up guy—or they would have been dealing with a two-goal deficit.
Score: Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 3
Gold: Marcus Kruger. The defensive-minded forward delivered a huge goal to tie it. Officially there was no assist, but everyone knows the goalpost deserves one.
Silver: Corey Crawford. We’ll forgive the four goals he allowed because he saved the Hawks more than once in the third period.
Bronze: Red Wings fans. For not showing up. All those empty seats means the traffic was lighter for the Hawks getting back to the airport.
Final score: Blackhawks 4, Red Wings 4
Gold: Darren Helm. Sigh. Game over. See ya in March, Red Wings.
Final score: Red Wings 5, Blackhawks 4
