A Chicago man was arrested early Sunday morning after he stole a police officer's baton and tried to flee from him, according to county prosecutors.

Darrell Cathey, 29, of the 11300 block of South Stewart Avenue, allegedly got into the struggle with police officers after he was riding in the backseat of a car that was pulled over by police at a traffic stop over a minor driving violation. Police officers said they saw Cathey moving furtively in the back seat of the car as though he was hiding something, so they asked him to step out of the car, the police report said.

While conducting a pat down Cathey showed police that he was carrying two small plastic baggies with a substance that appeared to be cannabis in it, the report said. Cathey then tried to flee from the police, the report said, and during the struggle that ensued he grabbed an officer's baton and ran from him with it before being arrested.

Cathey was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Monday afternoon and ordered held on a $50,000 bond.
