Chicago police seized 6,813 firearms last year

The Chicago Police Department seized 6,813 illegally possessed or used firearms from the streets last year, according to police officials.

That's slightly lower than the 7,400 or so illegal firearms the department announced it seized in 2012.

Some of the guns were likely used to commit crimes, while others were seized from people who officers learned were carrying the guns without the proper licensing.

Police officials used the announcement as an opportunity to criticize federal and state gun laws for contributing to the city's illegal gun problem in a press release and news conference Monday morning. The release also reiterated the mayor's call for a three-year minimum sentence for illegal gun possession offenses in the state.
