A Loop panhandler was accused of punching a suburban man on State Street last month after he allegedly got into an argument with other panhandlers over territory, county prosecutors said.
Martel Butler, 26, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, was described as a panhandler by prosecutors, who said he had been arguing over which pandhandlers, "Had the rights to a particular corner."
The man Butler is accused of punching, a 60-year-old from Forest Park, was walking north in the 100 block of North State Street near Macy's, while the group of panhandlers were talking, according to court records. Butler allegedly pulled away from the group to punch the man in the face, and then kicked him in the face when he fell to the ground.
The man was treated for his injuries, which included broken face bones, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to court records.
Butler was arrested Tuesday while he was visiting the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on unrelated charges. He was ordered held on $30,000 bond.
