Two men were arrested Tuesday after they were allegedly caught stealing mail from a mail carrier who had left a mailbag outside Ald. Roberto Maldonado's 26th ward office.

The men were caught after an alderman employee called police, who chased the men in a car until they threw a backpack full of stolen mail out of their car window, according to court records.

John Merritt, 29, of Berwyn, and Kevin Jones, 34, of the 3800 block of West Ohio Street, were both charged with theft from a state postal inspector. A witness told police that he saw the men loitering near a U.S. mail cart near 2511 W. Division St., then fleeing with bundles of mail addressed to the 60622 Zip Code.

The men were brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Thursday afternoon and released on a $25,000 I-bond with electronic home monitoring required.
