Doctor Who invades Chicago!

November 22, 2013|By Elliott Serrano, @ElliottSerrano | For RedEye

It's a good time to be a fan of Doctor Who - AKA "Whovian" - in Chicago these days. And here's why:

DOCTOR WHO 50TH ANNIVERSARY TAKES OVER CHICAGO:

After months of speculation and anticipation by “Whovians” all over the world, the BBC will be airing the 50th Anniversary Special of Doctor Who, titled “Day of the Doctor.” BBC America has been running a Who Marathon this week, and the special itself will be televised simultaneously around the world. Chicago audiences will be planting themselves in front of their televisions at 1:50 PM CST.

You can watch the live-stream of the preshow on the BBC America YouTube Page!

DOCTOR WHO HITS MOVIE THEATERS:

After the episode airs on television, truly obsessive Whovians – like yours truly – will be heading out to movie theaters on Monday to watch it yet again, but in 3D!

Fathom Events is hosting the 3D screenings, and tickets may still be available in your area.

CHICAGO TARDIS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO:

In case you weren’t aware, the city of Chicago has it’s very own Doctor Who convention! Dubbed Chicago TARDIS, Whovians from all over the Midwest – and some from beyond – gather in the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL to celebrate their love of the Timelord from Gallifrey.

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, there will be celebrity guests – Paul McGann (8th Doctor) and Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones) among them – cosplay, gaming and panels galore!

There’s even a movie theater-sized screening room where they show classic episodes!

The convention runs from November 29 - December 1. Pre-event tickets are sold out, but there are still a limited number of 3-day and Friday passes that will be made available at the door on Friday.

Sunday passes will be on sale Sunday. Sorry, but Saturday passes are all sold out.

And if you go to the event, you can help the hungry by being a part of the fundraiser for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, and there will also be a live and silent auction of Who memorabilia.

I will be in attendance at Chicago TARDIS, hosting a couple panels, shooting video and doing interviews.

Be sure to follow me on TWITTER and INSTAGRAM as I tweet the sights of the convention!
