What's it like to score in the NHL? The Blackhawks tell us

November 19, 2013|By Scott King | For RedEye

Every NHL player remembers his first time.

Scoring a goal, that is. Blackhawks Brandon Bollig, Michael Kostka, Brandon Pirri and Joakim Nordstrom all experienced that feeling earlier this season. Of course, whether it happened days or years ago, that feeling never goes away.

So what's it like the first time players light the lamp? We asked, the Blackhawks answered.

.

PATRICK KANE

Oct. 19, 2007, vs. Colorado

"It's exciting, I remember my first one, against Colorado. It was a two-on-one, [Patrick] Sharp made a nice pass over, I just made a shot in the net. It's a great feeling. It's something you always dream of happening."

.

JOHNNY ODUYA

Dec. 19, 2006, vs. Atlanta

"I think it was at home [with New Jersey], kind of late too. It took me a couple of months to get that goal. It was on [goaltender Johan Hedberg] Hedberg I think, Atlanta. Just kind of a fluke goal. I think I got the puck from somebody down low and just kind of shot a one-timer and it floated in or something like that. It was a pretty nice feeling."

Still have the puck?

"No I don't. … I think I'm one of the few guys in the league that [don't] have their first goal puck. I was bummed [about] that for a little bit. Maybe I'll save the last goal I score eventually. It was fun, I was looking forward to the second one. It took probably just as many games to get the second one."

.

MARCUS KRUGER

Oct. 29, 2011, vs. Columbus

"It was against Columbus here at home. First period, got a pass in the middle from [Brent] Seabrook I think, then got it to "Jammer" [Jamal Mayers], who shot it and got a rebound, open net. So it was pretty nice to just score the goal. Wasn't the prettiest one, but it was a nice one."

What'd you do with the puck?

"I got it framed here from the Blackhawks. I have it back home now in Sweden now actually."

Did you celebrate?

"I actually had my dad here. So it was nice to have him here. That was one of the first times he was here. So he got to see that. We didn't celebrate anything special, we went out and had dinner or something."

.

BRANDON PIRRI

Oct. 17, 2013, vs. St. Louis

"It was kind of a scramble play. [Marian] Hossa had the puck along the boards. Just tried finding an opening in the slot there, he made a great pass to me right in the middle. I had a little bit of time and [I] just tried getting it off. It was a pretty good shot, went post, in. Kind of a blur after that."

Still have the puck?

"The Hawks put it in a frame, put the game sheet in there. They do a good job with that. Pretty special, I'll probably be getting that soon."

Did you celebrate?

"I think we played the next day so there wasn't that much time to celebrate, go out. It was a pretty cool feeling. I remember calling my parents, they were pretty excited."

.

BRYAN BICKELL

April 4, 2007, vs. Detroit

"I remember my first goal was my first game, so it was double special to get my first goal in my first game. Wanted to play in the NHL growing up, and then getting an opportunity to score was awesome."

.

ANDREW SHAW

Jan. 1, 2012, vs. Philadelphia

"It's awesome, it's a special moment to see for anyone. It's something you work for as a kid growing up. You get that first one, it's just a huge joy. It puts a smile on everybody's face, that's for sure."
