Looking for a fantasy QB? Alex Smith could be the answer. (Howard Smith / Howard Smith-USA…)
As Lovie Smith used to say, fantasy football players look at the season in quarters. Well, if after the first four games you still need a quarterback, I have the answer. Alex Smith, E.J. Manuel or Brian Hoyer will help your team; they have been solid and can be spectacular.
Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are 4-0 and Alex Smith is a big reason for the turnaround. Smith is fitting in perfectly with new coach Andy Reid's West Coast offense and this former No. 1 pick is much more than a game manager. The fantasy numbers are solid: seven touchdowns, just under 240 yards passing per game, just two interceptions and a completion percentage of more than 60 percent.
E.J. Manuel, Buffalo Bills
This rookie from Florida State may have a been a surprise first-round pick in Buffalo, but Manuel is no longer a surprise for the upstart Bills. The numbers are respectable and I believe will get better: five touchdowns, three interceptions and averaging 214 yards through the air. Plus, in the past two weeks he has completed an impressive 67 percent of his throws. Keep in mind Manuel had knee surgery during the preseason, so the more in-game experience he gets, the better he will be. Manuel's upcoming schedule is tough (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Miami, New Orleans), but I believe he will continue to make strides.
Brian Hoyer, Cleveland Browns
Brian Hoyer is making the most of his opportunity in Cleveland. In two games as the starter, Hoyer is lighting it up: five touchdowns, three interceptions, an average of 295 yards passing, and a completion percentage of 60 percent. Hoyer is a Kurt Warner-type gunslinger who could help your team immediately.
