Geek To Me Home Theater: Iron Man 3 Blu-ray Review

September 20, 2013|By Elliott Serrano, @ElliottSerrano | For RedEye

When it took movie going audiences by storm, Iron Man 3 exceeded all expectations. The film - starring Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire/genius/playboy/philanthropist Tony Stark - would go on to become one of the top 5 all-time money makers in modern cinema. So how do you top that? Well, you start by making the home version as immersive an experience as possible using the newest blu-ray technology. That is what the architects behind the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray had in mind when they put it together, trying to give the home theater audience a disc that gives them the sensation of being Iron Man. But did they succeed? For this particular home theater tech geek, the results were mixed:

THE GOOD: One of the more underappreciated elements of the blu-ray disc is the navigation menu. When you pop that baby into your player, a dynamic menu should be both eye-catching and intuitive. The makers of the Iron Man 3 blu-ray decided to take it a step further and make the menu emulate the Golden Avenger’s Armor OS, J.A.R.V.I.S.

It’s kind of cool, to an extent. Switching between chapters, featurettes and previews is fairly simple once you get the lay of the land in the menu hierarchy.

The most outstanding extra on the disc is the “Agent Carter” short that is included. Featuring Hayley Atwell reprising her character from the “Captain America” movie, the short film depicts life for Cap’s former love-interest after the film has ended. It’s a rather clever, concise and efficient spy-thriller that sets up the character for more appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There is also a commentary track, behind-the-scenes features and a gag reel. And yeah, a look at the next Marvel movie THOR: THE DARK WORLD, but it doesn’t really give you much substance outside of what’s already been seen in teaser trailers.

All in all, I really enjoy Marvel’s practice of putting these extra “movie shorts” on the home video release of their films, which adds value to the editions, IMO.

THE BAD: Okay, I’m wondering if the issue I had with the disc was solely on my part because I haven’t heard much about it, but the IRON MAN 3 Blu-Ray was buggy as Stark’s Mark VIII armor, or at least it was on my older player.

On the initial load, my player paused for what seemed like forever. The Mandarin's Ten Rings logo appeared, and then a screen came up for “language selection” that seemed odd to me; turns out, that this was part of the J.A.R.V.I.S. interface that was created for folk who downloaded the app on the iPads. Well, I’m one of those MILLIONS of people who use an Android tablet instead of an iPad, and I found it rather annoying that there was no android equivalent to the app on Google Play.

During play of the actual film, the disc was prone to freeze up mid-chapter. After double-checking my blu-ray player’s firmware, I still ran into this problem, which makes me wonder if these discs could pose a problem to folks who don’t have the latest model. I finally got the film to play all the way through, but experiencing these sorts of technical issues kind of tainted the experience.

THE VERDICT: All in all, the IRON MAN 3 blu-ray is an impressive effort to give people a fun home-theater experience. The problem being that it’s apparently not geared towards EVERY geek, namely non-iPad users and folks with older blu-ray players.

IRON MAN 3 BLU-RAY/DVD gets a Geek Factor Rating of 2 (out of 4) Repulsor Blasts.
