A Safe Passage worker tasked with ushering students safely to and from schools has been accused of punching one mother in the face and stealing her food stamps card in two separate incidents this month.

Lashia Brown, 22, of the 100 block of North Kostner Avenue, was arrested Tuesday afternoon while working her Safe Passage Route in the 3100 block of West Madison Street and charged with theft and misdemeanor battery, according to court records.

County prosecutors said Brown was working at her Safe Passage job, helping one West Garfield Park mother's 4-year-old daughter get to school, when she took the mother's Illinois LINK card. She was caught on video surveillance at a local CVS Pharmacy using the LINK card to buy $435 worth of merchandise, the police report said.

Brown also was charged with punching the woman in the face, in a separate incident September 13, the police report said.

Brown appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Thursday afternoon and was held on $10,000 bond.
