Just as University of Chicago students begin returning to Hyde Park for a new school year, Chicago police have issued a community alert warning of an uptick in burglaries around the school.

In at least seven incidents, the alert said, one or more men used rear windows and doors to enter Hyde Park residences and take laptops, TVs, money, jewelry, tablets and other electronics while the owners weren't home.

The burglaries were reported at buildings in the 5200 block of South Drexel Boulevard and South Greenwood Avenue, the 100 block of East 53rd Street, the 5100 block of South Ellis Avenue, the 5100 and 5400 blocks of South University Avenue, and the 800 block of East 52nd Street.

Police officials recommend that area home owners keep their doors and windows secured and in good repair, and keep their residences well-lit.
