A West Englewood man was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with stealing an overdue rental car, county prosecutors said.

Steve Scott, 40, of the 6200 block of South Talman Avenue, told officers that he was "keeping the car" because the rental company had overcharged him, prosecutors said.

Scott was driving the car Tuesday afternoon near 71st Street and Indiana Avenue, and pulled over at a traffic stop by police officers for not wearing a seat belt when the officers discovered the Chevrolet he was driving had been report stolen, according to court records. The police report said Scott had begun renting the car in July, for about $230 a week, while his own car was in the shop being repaired.

Scott allegedly told police officers he was charged about $800 for a month of use by the rental company, and when the month was up he was told he had to return it or it would be reported stolen. Scott also said a company representative told him he could make arrangements to have the car picked up later in the day Tuesday afternoon, but no specific time to return the vehicle had been set.

"It's like, three weeks overdue," he told officers, according to the police report.

Scott was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Wednesday afternoon and held on $50,000 bond.
