Man exchanged meth for stolen scooter: Prosecutors

A man was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle after he traded crystal meth for a stolen scooter, county prosecutors said Thursday.

Steven Javier Shadd, 30, of the 900 block of West Eastwood Avenue, was arrested Wednesday morning in East Albany Park after he ran a stop sign while riding a motorized scooter, according to court records. A police officer tried to pull Shadd over for the traffic violation, but he leapt off the 2009 Bello Motorbike and fled on foot, the police report said.

When Shadd was tracked down to a backyard in the 4400 block of North Spaulding Avenue and charged with position of a stolen vehicle, officers searched his bag and found a plastic baggie containing $165 worth of powdered methamphetamine, the report said.

Shadd allegedly told police that he bought the bike from a friend, who knew it was stolen and said it didn't work very well, in exchange for "some crystal meth."

Shadd was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Thursday evening and held on $55,000 bond.
