A Macy's sales clerk was arrested Saturday and charged with theft after he gave himself a $600 gift card to the department store, and gave a man a $100 gift card in exchange for $1, county prosecutors said.

Marlow Webb, 19, of the 5700 block of South Carpenter Street was arrested Saturday evening at the 111 N. State St. department store after another employee alerted police that Webb had been allegedly taking money from the store.

The employee told police that Webb's first theft took place on Aug. 11, when the personal checks he submitted to the store to add money to his employee purchase card bounced--but not before he used the added funds to make several purchases totaling $840.12, according to the police report. The report said Webb admitted that he knew he did not have enough money in his personal checking account to cover the purchases, but that the money would be immediately available on his employee card nonetheless.

On Aug. 17 the employee observed Webb ringing up a $100 gift card for another man, and a $600 gift card for himself. Police arrived and arrested him later that day, shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Webb was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Monday afternoon and released on a $10,000 I-bond.
