A Cook County correctional officer was arrested for trying to bring a backpack full of hundreds of pills into the county jail, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Candice M. Grube, 45, of the 5400 block of South Linder Avenue, was charged with official misconduct and bringing contraband into a penal institution, according to court records.

Grube was arrested on Aug. 11 after a search revealed she had a loose 9 mm bullet in her pants pocket and about 458 pills--which represented five different pharmaceuticals--in her backpack, according to court records. Prosecutors said Grube had been under investigation up until that point.

A public defender said she has worked for the Department of Corrections for seven years.

Grube was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon, still wearing part of her work uniform. She was ordered held on $30,000 bond, as nearly a dozen county correctional officers looked on inside the courtroom.
