Flashback Weekend returns to Rosemont, IL

Zombie master George Romero and "Predator 2" star Danny Glover among featured guests

August 05, 2013|Elliott Serrano, for Redeye

There will be a lot of geeky events going on this coming weekend, including Flashback Weekend which will be returning to Rosemont, IL! I'll be roaming the halls of the Crowne Plaza myself, and taking in the sights of horror movie fandom in action. If you've never heard of FBW before, you really do need to check it out.

They've got the legendary George Romero ("Night of the Living Dead") making a very rare convention appearance. (Be sure to check back for my interview with Mr. Romero.) Danny Glover of "Predator 2" and the "Lethal Weapon" series will also be on hand. Chicago's very own Svengoolie will be signing autographs and hosting a costume contest. And James Marsters of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fame will be playing with his rock band "Ghost of the Robot":

Take a look at what the organizers of Flashback Weekend have put together!:

Celebrating our 2nd decade as Chicago’s largest and longest running Horror Convention!
Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention

August 9-11, 2013
Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare
5440 N. River Road         Rosemont, Illinois

Flashback Weekend is Chicago’s largest and longest running horror convention featuring a huge horror dealers room, special events, and major celebrity guests including legendary director George A. Romero in a rare convention appearance.   Flashback Weekend also dedicates itself to the preservation of the theatrical horror experience by featuring big screen horror presentations at the Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18 (located next to the convention hotel).

Special film screenings include a 35mm  45th  anniversary screening of the original “NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD” introduced by George A. Romero,

“PET SEMATARY” introduced by Mary Lambert and the cast, and the World Premiere of the unseen Pulsepounders

“TRANCERS” sequel “TRANCERS 1.5 CITY OF ANGELS” (1988) starring Tim Thomerson and Helen Hunt. Director Charles Band will be introducing the screening and will have many surprises for the audience.

Flashback Weekend saves the Horror Drive-In Theater experience

Flashback Weekend owns and operates the Midway Drive-In located in Dixon IL. Our goal is to preserve the big screen Horror theatrical experience.

The American Drive-In theater is a vital part of our American film history and one that needs to be preserved.

The Drive-In theater is especially important to the history of the Horror film. During the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, Drive-ins were the primary theatrical outlet for horror films, and helped build the careers of legendary directors including George A. Romero, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, and many more.

The Midway Drive-In now plays first-run films during the summer and classic horror film festivals during the spring and fall.

Many Drive-In theaters are now threatened by the film industry conversion from 35mm film to digital projection. Preserving the Drive-In theater experience is more important than ever.

All net proceeds from Flashback Weekend will go toward the operation and restoration of the Midway Drive-In.
