Say hello to the Shedd’s newest baby.

The Shedd Aquarium announced Tuesday the birth of a healthy rockhopper penguin chick, which hatched on June 12, according to a press release. The Shedd says the chick has been introduced to the Polar Play Zone along with fellow rockhoppers, and is being nursed by its mother and father.

According to the Shedd, the chick was born at 2.6 ounces, and has gained 1.4 ounces every day to a healthy weight of about 2 pounds. A spokesperson for the Shedd said a name has yet to be picked for the chick, mostly because gender cannot be determined until about a year after birth.

The chick’s next steps, according to the aquarium, are to eat on its own, grow waterproof plumage and swim for the first time.

The rockhopper is considered a “vulnerable” species because of disease and warming ocean temperatures in its natural habitat.
