July 01, 2013|By Julia Borcherts @Julia Borcherts | For RedEye

EAT

Now Open

Modern Asian Kitchen 1924 W. Division St. 773-772-6251

Chef-owner Tommy Wang updates traditional recipes from his father, Eugene—who owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmette—with local, sustainable ingredients in his new Chinese restaurant which opened in June and is called "Mak" for short. The menu includes the Mak Beef (steak stir-fried with scallions and sweet garlic sauce; $9.50), General Mak Chicken (similar to General Tso-style, $8.50) and more. 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

DRINK

Farm-to-table Cocktails

J. Rocco 749 N. Clark St. 312-475-0271

The new River North spot's in-house hydroponic garden provides the inspiration—and the fruits, vegetables and herbs—for eight $11 classic cocktails with fresh, modern twists such as the Cantanzaro (pepper-infused vodka with house-made limoncello, orange juice and grenadine) and the Rocco Highball (bourbon and house-made ginger ale). 5-10 p.m.

DO

Put 'Em Up

The Public House Theatre 3914 N. Clark St. 800-650-6449

"Tuesday" isn't always associated with "thrilling," but you can change that by joining authors Irvine Welsh ("Trainspotting") and Don De Grazia ("American Skin") as actors perform a staged reading of their new dark comedy ensemble thriller screenplay, "Creatives," in which a best-selling L.A. author returns to Chicago to visit his mentor's creative writing class. 7:30 p.m. $7 includes a cocktail.

Sidebar Comedy Show

Riverview Tavern 1958 W. Roscoe St. 773-248-9523

Chicago comedian Megan Gailey—who co-hosts the twice-weekly "Naked Sports Live" podcast—headlines this new comedy night that also features popular local joke slingers Ricky Gonzalez, Jonah Jurkens, Matty Ryan and David Drake. 9 p.m. $5. Tickets: thesidebarshow.com.

I Am About That Life

Reggie's Rock Club 2105 S. State St. 312-949-0120

Local non-profit Kids Off The Block teams up with 247HipHop, Modern Notoriety and others for an all-ages anti-violence event featuring street fashion and urban art exhibitions and performances by DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), DMC world champion DJ Chris Karns and hip-hop artists Planet Asia and Gensu Dean, Add-2, Alex Wiley, Vic Mensa, Naledge and more. 6 p.m. $10-$15. Tickets: reggieslive.com.
