Big crowds expected in Boystown after DOMA, Prop 8 decision

June 26, 2013|By Mick Swasko, @swasko

It’s expected to be a supreme celebration Wednesday night.

On the heels of Supreme Court rulings that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and paved way for gay marriage in California, bar owners in Boystown are preparing for larger than normal crowds -- even with Pride Week activities in full swing.

At Sidetrack, a Boystown video bar, a 16-foot banner was being printed Wednesday, which will be hung on the bars awning, according to a bar manager. “June 26, 2013 DOMA Overturned. A more perfect union,” the banner reads. The bar also opened early at 2 p.m. in anticipation of early crowds wanting to get a jump on celebrating before a planned rally and march.

It will be business as usual for Hydrate, Elixer and Replay, but with the anticipation of much larger crowds, according Jen Gordon, a spokesperson for the bars. The already popular Hydrag Wednesdays is expected to be packed at Hydrate -- where midweek specials include $4 Skyy cocktails, $4 “Drag Bombs,” $4 Corona and Corona Lights and $5 Dragtinis. At Halsted’s, half priced bottles of wine and $4.50 craft and imported drafts will be flowing.

“We’re very excited to celebrate with people,” Gordon said.
