From last month's Met Gala theme to an upcoming karaoke fundraiser in Wicker Park, punk is back in.
The First Ward is hosting the Wicker Punk Ball on July 12 at the Double Door to raise money for 826 CHI, a local nonprofit writing and tutoring center. A quarter of the event proceeds will benefit the nonprofit and The Boring Store. The rest will go to the ward political organization.
Making a guest appearance will be Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno (1st), also ward committeeman, who plans to hold the mic and sing karaoke with a live band. Among the song choices he is considering: "Know Your Rights" by The Clash, "Straight Edge" by Minor Threat, "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, and "Tourettes" by Nirvana.
"Some aldermen are into golf. I'm into punk," Moreno said.
This is not your typical fundraiser where beer and potato chips or wine and cheese are served and background music is playing. Moreno said he wanted to do something a little different and unique.
In 2011, Moreno attended a similar event at Quenchers Saloon to raise money for the Friends of Goethe School. There he sang Nirvana and Clash songs.
Moreno admits he doesn't have a great voice but brings energy and passion when he rocks out in front of the crowd.
This particular fundraising event will pay homage and respect to the punk rock genre instead of "getting up there singing a Barry Manilow song because it's hilarious and cute," Moreno said.
Tickets are $15 online or $25 at the door.
