A man was arrested Wednesday morning after police said they saw him taking jewelry, purses, and a computer from a Lakeview woman's apartment on Southport Avenue.

But before police caught the suspected burglar, Dennis Riley, 25, of Woodlawn, they watched him flee in a Mercedes-Benz and chased him down Southport Avenue until his car crashed into the unmarked police car, state prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, one police officer was treated in the hospital for injuries after the crash.

Riley, who was charged with residential burglary, appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Thursday afternoon and was held on $250,000 bond. Prosecutors said he is serving parole for vehicular hijacking.
