Adults busted for riding their bicycles on the sidewalk for half a mile after the lakefront trail ends at the northern point could get slapped with a $250 fine under a proposal introduced at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

Currently, cyclists ages 18 and older are prohibited from riding their bikes on the sidewalk along Sheridan Road between West Ardmore Avenue, which is where the lakefront trail ends, and West Sheridan Road, which is about 6400 north, in Edgewater.

The fine now is $50. But Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) proposed increasing the fine to $250.

The proposal goes to the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety for consideration.
