Motor vehicle theft doesn't have to look like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto. An Edgewater teenager was arrested Thursday evening and charged with motor vehicle theft when he attempted to take a neighbor's scooter for a spin, then abandoned it by the road.

Fausten Lingofo, 19, of the 5800 block of North Kenmore Avenue, was walking along North Kenmore around the 5300 block when he spotted a motor-powered Kymco People 150 Scooter resting in the front yard of a house, according to the police report.

Lingofo snuck past the home's iron gate and grabbed the scooter, the report said. He walked south on North Kenmore with it for several blocks, witnesses told police, and attempted to kickstart the scooter by stepping on part of it. When that didn't work, witnesses said he dropped it on the sidewalk and walked away.

Police arrested him at 6:15 pm around 5120 North Kenmore and charged him with posession of a stolen motor vehicle. The police report said Lingofo told them, "I didn't take any bike."

He appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Friday afternoon and was held on $20,000 bond.
