Attention all pie lovers, Pie it Forward, a group of people dedicated to promoting kindness around the nation, will be giving away free pie in Wicker Park—near the fountain at the intersection of Damen Avenue and Schiller Street--at 6 p.m. this evening.
The group, also known as OccuPIE, started giving away pie in Ann Arbor, Mich., after being inspired by a speech from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, according to Sarah Fertig, the executive weirdo do-gooder for Pie it Forward.
“She said if you built a factory and got rich, you still have an obligation to pay into the system that helped create your success,” she said. “The pie is a metaphor for that same idea. I made the pie, but I didn't plant the apple trees or the wheat field or milk the cow or churn the butter. Just because I assembled the pie doesn't make it mine all mine!”
Fertig said the group decided to host pie giveaways in different locations throughout the U.S. in order to lead by example and show others how sharing can make the world a nicer place.
In terms of pie preparation, Fertig said the pies are made a day in advance of the event at the house of the group’s host for each city they visit.
“These particular pies [for the Chicago event] were baked in a kitchen in a collective house near California and Division,” she said.
Pie it Forward can be spotted at today’s pie giveaway holding a sign that reads,“FREE PIE AND REVOLUTION.”
