A man was caught trying to steal more than $300 worth of goods from an Uptown drugstore Saturday, according to police officials. But before he could be arrested, he allegedly pepper-sprayed himself in the face.

Two CVS drugstore employees told police they saw Dustin Cullins, 25, of the near South Side, stuff hundreds of dollars worth of products into a backpack on Saturday. The employees detained Cullins in a security room, according to the police report, and he told them he was willing to return the merchandise. But then Cullins allegedly sprayed mace at them--and himself, while the employees waited for police officers to arrive.

Cullins was treated at the hospital before being processed at the District 20 police station, according to the police report. He was charged with attempted retail theft and two counts of aggravated battery. Cullins appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Monday afternoon and was held on $90,000 bail.
