Chicago native Danny Pudi and “Community” fans got a big surprise Friday during a flurry of news about what we’ll be watching on the TV networks this fall. The beleaguered NBC sitcom has been renewed for fifth season.

“Wild times and I truly didn't know what to expect. But that's always been our show--we never know what to expect,” Pudi wrote in an email. “Gotta thank the fans [and] my mom … for cheering on the Greendale gang. GO BULLS!”

Did I mention Pudi’s from Chicago? The city’s film and TV industry also received good news Friday: At least five shows set to air during the 2013-14 season will be filmed in Chicago, the Tribune reports.

NBC’s “Chicago Fire” will be back, and with it a police-themed spin-off series called “Chicago PD.” NBC also picked up the new midseason series “Crisis,” a political thriller starring Dermot Mulroney and Gillian Anderson.

ABC picked up two Chicago-filmed pilots. “Betrayal” stars James Cromwell and Hannah Ware, who already knows Chicago after filming two seasons of “Boss” here. She plays a woman who has an affair with the lawyer squaring off against her husband in court. “Mind Games,” which was called “Influence” when the pilot filmed here in the spring, stars Steve Zahn and Christian Slater as brothers who run an agency that uses psychological manipulation to solve clients’ problems.

ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and the CW will make their official announcements during their upfront presentations this week, but here’s a list of shows that have been renewed or canceled so far, and the pilots that have been picked up to become series.
