Right before a South Side man stole another man's cell phone from his pants pocket Saturday afternoon, he helped the man narrowly avoid another potential robbery on W. 79th St., prosectors said.

Antoine Hunter, 23, of the 8000 block of S. Princeton Ave. in Chatham, was standing across the street from the man he planned to rob when he saw a group of youths surround him, state prosecutors said. "Get away," Hunter yelled at the group before approaching the victim and asking him if he was OK.

Before the men separated, Hunter reached into the victim's pocket and took a cell phone worth more than $500, according to court records.

Hunter appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Monday and was charged with theft. He was held on $75,000 bail.
