A 31-year-old woman was just trying to hail a cab on North Michigan Avenue on Tuesday morning when a man allegedly slapped her in the face and took her iPhone.

"You want to fight me?" the man asked the woman, according to the police report, before pushing her into rush-hour traffic. The report said he also threw her iPhone on the ground, cracking the screen, before running off.

Mark Latter, 25, of Lakeview was charged with robbery and aggravated battery in the incident. He did not appear at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Friday because he was in the hospital. His bail was set at $100,000.

The woman, a Gold Coast resident who was on her way to class when the assault allegedly took place and did not know Latter, said she was taken by surprise.

"I was just scared, I just didn't really know what to do," she said in an interview. After the alleged assault she sought help from a man in a nearby Channel 7 News van, who called the police. Police arrested Latter a few blocks away at 716 N. Rush Street.

Latter's attorney, Barry Sheppard, told the court that he was experiencing psychological problems.
