Boba and Yoda and Darth...oh my! Final Predictions for The Star Wars Character Tourney

April 03, 2013|Elliott Serrano, for Redeye

For the last couple weeks, Star Wars fans everywhere have been voting in the "This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tourney." If you've been following along here at Geek To Me, special guest commentator - and fellow Star Wars geek - Ben Finfer of The Score 670 AM has been giving his predictions. I've also been giving my own, and to this point haven't missed a pick. Finfer's record is blemished only by a Clone Wars related match-up in the first round.

Now we're going to bring this baby in by giving our predictions for the current "Duel of the Eights", into the Final Four and into the ultimate championship round.

You may be surprised at who one of us picks:

Elite 8 is Enough

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Yoda:  This is an epic battle between two giants in the Star Wars community (figuratively speaking, of course).  Neither is infallible based on their cowering from the Emperor while he ravaged the galaxy for two decades.  Kenobi, however, is the clear winner here.  First of all, he defeated two Sith Lords.  Second, he appeared in all six movies.  Third, he wasn't all preachy and stuff.  Looks like old Ben will be saying "hello there" to the Final Four.

PREDICTED WINNER: Obi-Wan Kenobi

(I disagree with Finfer. While Obi-Wan is probably one of the greatest Jedi Masters in the galaxy, there’s just something about those Yoda ears and backwards speech that make his character irresistible to fans. I’m going with Yoda to get the upper hand over his former padawan learner.

PREDICTED WINNER: YODA)

R2-D2 vs. Chewbacca:  Chewie is absolutely the best cinematic wing man this side of Samwise Gamgee.  And he's made a hell of a run in the tournament.  That changes in the Elite 8.  I know he's about four feet taller than the droid, but I've got to believe Artoo would find a way to win this thing.  He must have an electric razor in his arsenal somewhere.  This will probably be the closest matchup in the round.

PREDICTED WINNER:  R2-D2

(I second Finfer on this pick. Artoo has got loads of charisma for an astromech droid and everybody just loves those R2-D2 android phones Verizon came out with a while back. So if the question is “R2-D2 where are you?” In the next round is the answer.

PREDICTED WINNER : R2-D2)

Darth Vader vs. Jabba the Hutt:  Ohhh ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ahhh ha ha ha ha ha ha.  C'mon, seriously.

PREDICTED WINNER:  DARTH VADER

(Darth Vader has been dominating this tournament, winning his match-ups by the largest margins of any character. Finfer is right, the Hutt doesn’t stand a chance.

PREDICTED WINNER: DARTH VADER)

Boba Fett vs. Emperor Palpatine: Tough call here.  Palpatine is a force to be reckoned with and the face of evil, the horribly disfigured and revolting face.  But he's also kind of a tool.  So that's why I lean towards the bounty hunter.  Sure it could be considered an upset, but Fett is very likeable.  And It's difficult to discount his popularity amongst Star Wars fans.  So I'm executing Order 66 on Palpatine.

PREDICTED WINNER: BOBA FETT

(Boba Fett has been winning his match-ups with margins that rival Vader’s. Finfer is right. Palpatine is gonna get dropped like a sack of potatoes down a reactor shaft.

PREDICTED WINNER: BOBA FETT)

Final Four the Force

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. R2-D2:  The Cinderella story ends here for Artoo.  I only wonder if voters hold some sort of grudge against Obi-Wan for not even recognizing the droid when he saw him in 'A New Hope'.  Uh dude...I know it's been 19 years, but you honestly don't remember him?  I guess that Tatooine heat isn't good for the brain.  Or maybe Kenobi just didn't hang on to his Galactic yearbook.  Anyway, I still think he wins this thing.  Obi-Wan might not care about the little people/droids, but he's the most important character not named Skywalker.

PREDICTED WINNER: OBI-WAN KENOBI

(Since Yoda bounced Kenobi in the previous round, I expect him to do the same with Artoo, although it’s gonna be close. Really close.

PREDICTED WINNER: YODA)

Darth Vader vs. Boba Fett:  Like any good mob boss, once you no longer need someone you make sure to get rid of them.  That's what will happen here between employer and employee.  I picture Boba as Tommy from 'Goodfellas' walking into a Death Star room believing he's about to become a made man.

Oh no----- PREDICTED WINNER: DARTH VADER

(This match-up is between the two most dominating characters in the tourney.  Up to this point, Vader didn’t even break a sweat. Fett has also walked into the Finals to this point, with voters finding for him overwhelmingly in previous rounds. This has all the makings of a close contest. And an upset.

PREDICTED WINNER: BOBA FETT)

AND THE WINNER IS…
