Last week, special contributor Ben Finfer and I gave our predictions for the first round of the "This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament". I went 8-0 in the Light Side brackets while Finfer went 7-1 in the Dark Side. (Finfer chose Hondo Ohnaka over Cad Bane. An honest mistake.) This week we see who's got a higher midichlorian count by switching sides and giving our predictions for who will make the Elite Eight:
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT SIDE, By Ben Finfer
Han Solo vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi: C'mon, this is a second round match-up? We're choosing between the coolest smuggler in the galaxy and the most-talented Jedi Knight to ever don the robe. In a true fight Kenobi really should have no problem cutting down Solo. Unless, of course, they were competing in Kessel Run trivia. The fact is Solo is the most popular character to Star Wars fans because we all want to be him. And even though he's more foolish than the fool because he's the fool who follows the fool (Kenobi's logic, not mine) I think I know how people will vote here.
PREDICTED WINNER: HAN SOLO
Luke Skywalker vs. Yoda: Yes, he brought balance to the Force, yet I still question Luke's skills as a Jedi. I'm sorry, but running around with Yoda on your back hardly makes you qualified to defeat him. Yoda has forgotten more about the Force than Luke will ever know. Assuming the match-up takes place at a location other than the Galactic Senate chamber, prevails here I think Yoda does.
PREDICTED WINNER: YODA
R2-D2 vs. Princess Leia: That little droid is scrappy and resourceful. He has many tools at his disposal and knows how to use them. Plus let's be honest...he's had a much better post-Star Wars career than Carrie Fisher.
PREDICTED WINNER: R2-D2
Chewbacca vs. Ahsoka Tano: Tano had a good first round and I'm fan of her work. But the voters aren't going against Chewie here. Otherwise they're liable to have their arms pulled out of their sockets.
PREDICTED WINNER: CHEWBACCA
DANCING IN THE DARK SIDE, By Elliott Serrano
Darth Vader vs. Darth Maul: Among all the characters left in this region, Darth Vader is the most iconic. His visage is plastered all over posters, comic books and lunchboxes. Darth Maul is a cool character that had the potential to be the Vader of the Prequel Trilogy, but was sorely underused. It’s too bad that the only time we’ll get to see Vader and Maul face off is in this tourney, because I’m pretty sure that anywhere else it would have been more of a contest. In this case, it’s all too easy for the Dark Lord of the Sith.
PREDICTED WINNER: DARTH VADER
Jabba the Hutt vs. Cad Bane: The greatest crime lord in the galaxy goes up against one if it’s greatest bounty hunters. This all comes down to whether Bane’s reputation, which was built on appearances in the Clone Wars animated series, can overcome that of Jabba the Hutt, whose presence loomed over the entire Classic Trilogy. I’m afraid that while he may have lots of fans, when he goes up against a heavy like Jabba - pun intended - Cad’s rep is “bantha poodoo.”
PREDICTED WINNER: JABBA THE HUTT
Boba Fett vs. Jango Fett: It’s father versus son in this match-up of bounty hunters. While the two may have equaled each other in screen-time (Jango was a featured character in Attack of the Clones, while Boba appears for bits in all three Classic Trilogy Special Editions), Boba get cool points over his dad. Yeah, he did meet a somewhat ignominious fate when a blind Han Solo accidentally sent him flying into the mouth of the Sarlacc, but at least he didn’t lose his cool - and his head - facing off against a Jedi Knight. Besides, there’s just something about a guy in weathered armor with a wookiee braid attached that all the girls love.
PREDICTED WINNER: BOBA FETT
Count Dooku vs. Emperor Palpatine: I’m sorry, but when you’re supposed to be a Sith Lord bent on eliminating the Jedi, with a cool alias like "Darth Tyrannus", you really should fare better. But even though he can best most Padawans in a light saber duel, I can’t get over the fact that his name sounds like a Green Day album. And poop. Palpatine, on the other hand, is the creepiest mofo to ever put on a black robe and shoot lightning from his fingers. Palpatine will face a tougher match in Boba Fett in the next round, but for now, the Master will dispatch the Apprentice.
PREDICTED WINNER: EMPEROR PALPATINE
