Taste test: Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos tacos

Today marked the official debut of Taco Bell's new Cool Ranch Doritos Locos tacos, the obvious and much-anticipated follow-up to last year's Nacho Cheesier version. We picked up several of the tacos from the Taco Bell in the Ogilvie Transportation Center downtown for $1.39 each. Here's what we thought.

Brian Moore, web editor: I was expecting to bite into what would taste like a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos with some taco meat (no horse meat hopefully) and cheese thrown in for good measure. What I got instead was the familiar taste of a Taco Bell taco with a bit of the Cool Ranch Dorito flavor to give it a little extra umph. Good enough, but not sure it's worth the extra 30 or 40 cents.

Adam Lukach, web intern: Unfortunately the flavor of the Cool Ranch didn't really hit until the end, and it didn't have the flavor-strength of their breath-ruining chip brethren. I had a supreme taco though, so that could have been a factor with its added ingredients. Overall, though, I probably wouldn't cough up the extra 30 cents or whatever it is for these, but I might if I was feeling personally generous. Pro tip: it's worth the extra cents to have a Cheesy Gordita Crunch with this shell inside instead of the standard.

Lisa Arnett, Eat & Drink editor: I didn't eat much junk food as a kid, but Cool Ranch Doritos were my jam. These tacos don't have the same eat-them-until-your-mouth-is-numb quality as the chips, though. I didn't taste the seasoning at first, probably because it didn't seem to be very evenly coated on my taco shell--in some places, the seasoning had gathered in a ring along the top edge. Though it didn't have as much punch as I expected, it was still a fun alternative to a regular shell.

Kate Bernot, nightlife and events reporter: The Cool Ranch taste isn't noticeable until the very end of a bite, and even then, it's faint. Given the circumstances under which I normally consume Taco Bell (choose two of three: after 2 a.m.; with a BAC over the legal driving limit; while in college), I likely wouldn't notice the Cool Ranch flavor at all. No way would I cheat on my Cheesy Gordita Crunch for this.
