Moped enthusiasts now have a new place to turn for the products and services alike.
MOPED, at 2068 N. Western Ave., has been doing great business so far, despite little-to-no advertising thus far, said co-owner Will Andrews, 37. Andrews opened the store in August of this year with co-owner Marla Wisuri, 23.
Both new and vintage mopeds adorn the walls of the store, which specializes not only in the sale of rare and collectible bikes, but also repairs, body work and parts.
"We've been repairing a lot of vintage mopeds. There are not a lot of places to do that," said Andrews, who also lives in Wicker Park. "We're trying to keep as busy as much as we can over the winter months. We really hadn't planned on selling any new ones until spring."
Andrews owns more than 20 mopeds himself and said the bikes are addictive to purchase.
"Mopeds are kind of strange. Once someone gets one, they end up collecting them," he said. "They want one of every flavor. It seems like once they get one, they have five or six in a few months. I know a lot of people like that out there."
Andrews said the popular bikes offer practical advantages too, such as getting more than 100 miles per gallon of gas and receiving bike-like treatment, including the ability to ride in bike lanes or park on bike racks.
While the winter months have slowed down some riders, Andrews said the shop still receives heavy foot traffic, and recent, milder winters have made riding much more possible.
MOPED offers climate-controlled storage at $50 per month, and requires a $60 deposit for any potential work that users want done otherwise.
