Bears keep their cool—mostly—in smothering the feisty Lions

October 22, 2012|RedEye

The Bears and Detroit Lions love to hate each other. The last time they faced off, the Lions' Ndamukong Suh ripped off Jay Cutler's helmet, Detroit's Nate Burleson shoved Tim Jennings out of bounds and Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford grabbed D.J. Moore by the helmet and threw him to the ground. The fact these teams dislike each other is nothing new, of course, and the stakes were high enough to keep things chippy Monday. The Bears were trying to hold on to first place in the NFC North, and the Lions were attempting to revive their playoff hopes.

We tracked how hot under the collar Bears fans were Monday on a scale of 1 (chill) to 4 (inferno!).

FIRST QUARTER

On Detroit's first play from scrimmage, Calvin Johnson is irked because he wants pass interference called on Charles Tillman. Here we go again …

Heat check: Simmering

Jay Cutler takes a borderline late hit from Kyle Vanden Bosch after being sacked. Keep your eyes peeled, ref!

Heat check: Heated

After a 39-yard run by Forte, Cutler scrambles left and finds Brandon Marshall for an easy 7-yard touchdown. Ah, that's better.

Heat check: Chill

The Bears burn their second timeout of the first half with 6:43 left in the first quarter. Haven't you been practicing all week?!

Heat check: Heated

A Lions offensive lineman and Bears defensive lineman shove each other after a short run by Mikel Leshoure. Now now, boys. Play nice. Or at least fair.

Heat check: Simmering

Julius Peppers sacks Matthew Stafford to end a Lions drive. Whew, that's a relief.

Heat check: Chill

Detroit defensive lineman Corey Williams shoves Earl Bennett in the back on a long run by Cutler. Trying to start something, dude?

Heat check: Heated

SCORE: Bears 10, Lions 0

SECOND QUARTER

Cutler almost throws an interception early in the quarter. Don't mess with us like that, Jay!

Heat check: Simmering

Lance Louis commits a false start penalty inside the 5, and Forte barely makes it out of the end zone on the next play. Must … fight off … heart attack …

Heat check: Heated

Cutler hits Marshall for a first down! Plenty of room to punt now, though Bears fans are hoping for much better.

Heat check: Chill

Detroit's Alfonso Smith pulls down Marshall and draws a horse collar penalty. Good for the Bears, even if it looks like the Lions got screwed there.

Heat check: Simmering

Cutler takes a sack, and Robbie Gould's field goal attempt on the next play is blocked. Argh!

Heat check: Heated

Lions lineman Ndamukong Suh slams Cutler down on his right shoulder while sacking him, and the Bears QB is slow to get up. THAT'S why Suh's not welcome in this town.

Heat check: Inferno

The Bears recover a Lions fumble, just when it looked like Detroit would score …

Heat check: Chill

… Meanwhile, Cutler heads to the locker room with 1:22 left in the half, visibly shaken up. Suuuuuuuuh!!!

Heat check: Inferno

SCORE: Bears 10, Lions 0

THIRD QUARTER

Cutler returns for the Bears' first drive in the second half, and Chicago's blood pressure goes down 900 percent.

Heat check: Chill

Cutler's first pass of the quarter crashes to Earth well before it reaches its intended receiver. Uh oh.

Heat check: Heated

After the Lions muff a punt, the Bears tack on a field goal—though only after two near-interceptions by Cutler. Still nervous …

Heat check: Simmering

The Lions march downfield and look like they're going to score a touchdown …

Heat check: Inferno

… until the Bears again force and recover a Detroit fumble inside the 5. How much more of this can we take?

Heat check: Simmering

Another false start inside the 5 for the Bears?! This one's on Roberto Garza. Learn. The freaking. Snap count.

Heat check: Heated

SCORE: Bears 13, Lions 0

FOURTH QUARTER

Devin Hester gains 23 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter. Maybe the Bears will cruise to the finish.

Heat check: Chill

Hmm, maybe not. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Chilo Rachal is flagged for a personal foul, negating most of Hester's gain.

Heat check: Simmering

The Bears' J.T. Thomas tussles with Detroit's Travis Lewis after the whistle on a Bears punt return. Ditto for Rachal and Cliff Avril on the next play. Just when we thought we were past this …

Heat check: Heated

D.J. Moore foils the Lions' desperation drive with an interception with less than 3 minutes left. Good night, Detroit!

Heat check: Chill

FINAL SCORE: Bears 13, Lions 7
