'Thriller' flash mob to hit Rogers Park

Members of the Northside Dance Theatre in Rogers Park are taking their moves to the streets for a Halloween flash mob--and the good news, you’re more than welcome to join them.

The theatre will be holding the one-day event on October 28.  They’ll dance to--what else?--“Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

Participants are encouraged to join in the fun--and dance experience is definitely not a requirement. Program Manager Cheryl Cavey promises the routine will be totally user-friendly.  There’s no advance registration required--participants can just show up at the studio on 7015 N. Glenwood Ave. at 9 a.m. that day for a quick rehearsal. The actual flash mob will take place at 11:30 outside the studio.

According to Cavey, the studio facilitates the flash mobs--they’ve done a few flash mobs in the past, and usually have a crowd of about 25 to 30 people involved. Cavey encourages people to come out because it’s “not a big commitment.  It’s one day, one event.”

Costumes are highly recommended but not required. After all, what’s the fun of doing the "Thriller" dance without some sweet zombie makeup?

“We’re not going to tell someone they can’t dance with us if they’re not in costume,” Cavey said.

The studio will likely have extra makeup and other props that can be pulled together for the truly unprepared.

The theater will be setting up a small PA system for the music, and photos and videos of the performance will be shared via Facebook and YouTube.
