Kickers really do matter in fantasy football

When I got the opportunity to write this column every week, I never thought I'd be writing about kickers. I still can't believe I am dedicating this column to them. Yet this position is very important in fantasy football. If your kicker has a good week, it gives you a great shot at winning. This year players are making longer field goals, which is especially important in leagues that give bonus points for field goals longer than 50 yards. If you can get one of these kickers, their feet will serve you well the rest of the season.

Robbie Gould, Bears

No Bears bias here—Gould is one of the NFL's best. This year is no exception, as he's 8-for-8 on field goals, including one from 54 yards. Gould gets a gold medal for consistency, making over 80 percent of his attempts throughout his career, and has missed only one extra point in eight years.

Greg Zuerlein, St. Louis

Greg the Leg has been unbelievable for the Rams. The rookie from Missouri Western has connected on all 12 of his field goal attempts, including one from 56 yards and another from 60. Zuerlein is the Rams' best offensive weapon and he might be the NFL's best kicker.

Blair Walsh, Minnesota

The Vikings have a nice offense. Quarterback Christian Ponder is better than expected, Adrian Peterson is back at full speed, Percy Harvin is a dynamic, and Walsh is exceeding expectations. And the better they do, the better Walsh is, and he has not disappointed. The kicker is 9-for-10 on field goals and has three from more than 50 yards.

Kickers aren't sexy—they're not the story on Mondays when you check in your team. But they can help you win your league.
