What's really going on at the Republican National Convention? John Giokaris, political director of the Chicago Young Republicans, is in Tampa, Fla., and giving RedEye a behind-the-scenes peek at the event.

Hurricane? What hurricane? While our thougths are with the communities in Isaac's path, Tampa barely was touched. As it turned out, there was really no need to cancel Monday's events. It just gave everyone an excuse to party.

Ybor City and The Cuban Club are the hot spots around Tampa Bay. Anyone who wasn't working was drinking and socializing there—not just politicians and staffers, but also celebrities, musicians and media personalities.

Driving around the VIPs is interesting. They're pretty cool and down-to-earth for the most part, but some are definitely prima donnas. One guy always wants to be driven right to the front door of the convention center (which we can't do), and he's not even that important. There was another guest whose staff had to go through ridiculous lengths to keep her hair dry when it was raining.

Now the program finally is getting under way! Bring on the big man from Jersey!
