Details on this weekend's street festivals

August 23, 2012|By Emily Van Zandt | RedEye

Expect Logan Square and Bucktown to be more packed than usual this weekend with not one, but three fests rolling into the 'hoods. On Friday, Boulevard Bash kicks off near Logan Boulevard and Milwaukee Avenue while Bucktown Arts Fest and the first-ever Taste of Latin America join in on Saturday and Sunday. If the South Side is more your scene, put Taste of Greece on your list; the annual favorite is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday along South Halsted in Greektown.

Boulevard Bash

Where: Logan Boulevard at Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square

When: 5-10 p.m. Friday, noon-10 p.m. Saturday and noon-9 p.m. Sunday

Saturday's headliners include hip-hop artist and Chicago native Chali 2na (known for his work with Jurassic 5) and the House of Vibe, scheduled to hit the West Stage at 8 p.m. Soul fans will want to show up early for neighborhood favorite DJs Windy City Soul Club, set to perform a set at 6 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's lineup includes dance lessons and Latin sounds on the East Stage capped off by the Chicago-based New Orleans-style ensemble Lowdown Brass Band at 7 p.m.

Taste of Greece

Details: If the name and location didn't already tip you off, let us assure you of one thing: This fest is dedicated to all things Greek. Weekend plans include dance performances, music and an appearance by the Jesse White Tumblers. Vino fans can partake in a Greek wine tasting from 2-8 p.m. both days for a $10 entry fee. Plenty of eats from restaurants including Greek Islands, Greektown Gyros, The Parthenon Restaurant and Santorini will also be available throughout the weekend.

Bucktown Arts Fest

Where: Senior Citizens Memorial Park, Oakley and Belden avenues in Bucktown

When: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Cost: Free

Details: This non-profit fest has worked to raise money for arts education in the neighborhood for more than 25 years. Nearly 200 artists, musicians and dancers will participate over the course of weekend, and fest grounds include a main music stage and a smaller, jazz-focused stage. Dance and theater troupes will also stage performances over the weekend, including Collaboraction's "Dome of Doom" dance battle, scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday. Yes, the battle is in a cage. Yes, people will wear costumes. And yes, you can still sign up.

Taste of Latin America

Where: 3600 W. Armitage Ave. in Logan Square

When: 5-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Get your fill of Latin American-inspired dishes from restaurants such as Texas de Brazil, 90 Miles Cuban Cafe, Las Tablas Colombian Steakhouse, Sabor Latino, Cuscatleco Pupuseria y Restaurante and more. As if the spread of chalupas, pupusas, empanadas and alcapurria weren't enough, wine, pina coladas, and other boozy beverages will also be served.

Ravenswood Remix: Sept. 1-2 in Ravenswood

Taste of Polonia: Aug. 3-Sept.3 in Jefferson Park
