What Rex Grossman is REALLY thinking

August 16, 2012|RedEye

First Caleb Hanie with Denver, now Rex Grossman with Washington. It's as if the NFL set it up so Bears fans would have something to talk about in the preseason, when the games are as meaningless as Adam Dunn's batting average.

Grossman's career in Chicago was a mixed bag, with a Super Bowl appearance the high point among some head-scratching seasons. In a recent Tribune interview, the 31-year-old sounds like he's ready to mentor the Redskins' new No. 1 quarterback, Robert Griffin III. That's all well and good, but we know what he's REALLY thinking. Ahem.

"[Robert Griffin III] has a strong arm. He's pretty accurate. His running ability is pretty impressive also. … I think he's going to be great this year. But down the road, he's going to be phenomenal."

TRANSLATION: "OK, so the kid can outrun me, but was he ever compared favorably to Brett Favre and his gunslinger mentality? I don't think so."

"As long as I handle my business and compete, helping out doesn't detract from what I'm doing. … I want to be playing. If I have a chance to play, I'm going to try to take full advantage of it."

TRANSLATION: "I'm not going to slash his tires or anything, but it's not gonna break my heart if this guy pulls a Donovan McNabb and throws a bunch of bounce passes early on."

"Anytime you are the No. 2 and No. 3 quarterback on a team, you talk a lot. Especially during the course of the year because they are not getting any reps."

TRANSLATION: "I wonder if Ashton Kutcher's gonna be at Soldier Field on Saturday. Or Danica Patrick. Hell, I'll take Jim Belushi."

"I wish those injuries [in 2004 and 2005] didn't happen. But they did. The ACL followed up by the preseason ankle injury back to back cost me a lot of money, and 29 regular-season games."

TRANSLATION: "I totally could have been Derrick Rose's neighbor at Trump Tower if my stupid body would have cooperated."

"I've had a lot of great experiences in that stadium. They are the team that drafted me, and doing everything we did there those six years, that will always be with me. … That city and that stadium will always be etched in my brain as one of the biggest times in my life."

TRANSLATION: "Uh, any chance I can have Jason Campbell's job? I'd MUCH rather throw to Brandon Marshall and hand off to Matt Forte than spend another season in Washington. Pretty please?"
