Fest Fridays: Lincoln Square "Square Roots," Roscoe Village Burger Fest and more

This weekend's street fest details

This weekend, the North Side is alive with festivals offering a whole lot of cold beer, live tunes and tasty eats. Whether you're continuing your Taste-capades north of the river, sampling sliders at Roscoe Village Burger Fest or dancing and drinking at Lincoln Square's new Square Roots Fest, this weekend's packed fest schedule shouldn't disappoint.

Lincoln Square "Square Roots" Fest

When: 5-10 p.m. Friday, noon-10 p.m. Saturday, noon-8 p.m. Sunday

Where: Lincoln Avenue between Montrose and Wilson avenues in Lincoln Square

Cost: $10 suggested donation

The basics: With an emphasis on three forms of entertainment, the organizers of this first-time fest hope it will stand out among standard summer standards with music, gourmet foods and craft beers from around the Midwest. The tunes at range from indie rock to folk to Afro-Colombian rhythm, with acts such as the Waco Brothers, Ezra Furman and Chicago-based songwriter Musikanto on the schedule.

The brews: Ten local breweries are scheduled to pour, including Two Brothers, Metropolitan, 5 Rabbit, Vander Mill Cider, New Holland and Greenbush.

Roscoe Village Burger Fest

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Where: Belmont Avenue and Damen Avenue in Roscoe Village

Cost: $6 suggested donation

The basics: Carnivores, this one's for you. Roscoe Village Burger Fest is back with 11 burger vendors peddling plenty of beef, turkey and veggie patties. 

The burgers: Chicago-based vendors including Rockit Burger Bar, Cortland's Garage and Butcher & The Burger serve full-sized burgers along with slider portions to ensure you have room to taste more than one. A panel of burger-loving judges will award critic's choice awards on Saturday, while you can join the action in a people's choice text vote on Sunday.

Taste of River North

When: 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday, noon-10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday

Where: Ward Park, 630 N. Kingsbury St. in River North

Cost: $5 suggested donation Friday-Sunday; $8 suggested donation after 5 p.m. Sunday

The basics: Local chefs, musicians and artisans alike come together for this three-day fest showcasing what River North is all about: food, art and design.

The restaurants: All of the foods featured at this year's fest were selected based on their popularity. Save room for snacks from Ai, 25 Degrees and Kinzie Chophouse.

Summer on Southport

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday

Where: 3700 N. Southport Ave. at Waveland Avenue in Lakeview

Cost: $5 suggested donation

Weren't quick enough to snag tickets to Bruce Springsteen's sold-out-in-under-an-hour show at Wrigley Field? This Lakeview fest offers the next best thing with tribute band Bruce in the USA among other fest favorites such as Too White Crew and Hairbangers Ball.

Milwaukee Avenue Arts Fest

When: 4-11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday

Where: Milwaukee Avenue between Kimball and California avenues in Logan Square

Cost: $10 for a three-day festival wristband

This Logan Square fest transforms Milwaukee Avenue into a full-on arts district with pop-up galleries, live music, performance art shows, interactive art activities and an indoor art market.

Sheffield Garden Walk

When: Noon-10 p.m. Saturday, noon-5:30 p.m. Sunday

Where: Webster Avenue and Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park

Cost: $7 suggested donation; $10 suggested donation after 3 p.m.

While wandering some of Lincoln Park's prettiest gardens or taking a guided architectural tour through the Sheffield neighborhood, stop for refreshments and live music at this 44th annual fest.
