Starting Five: The to-do list for sports fans this week

July 01, 2012|By Chris Sosa | RedEye

WATCH

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

2 p.m. Wednesday, ESPN

If you happen to be flipping channels during your day off on Wednesday, you might be amazed at how much food some people can pack away in a short amount of time. Just don't try it at your backyard barbecue. Remember, these are professionals. Kinda gross professionals, but professionals nonetheless.

ATTEND

White Sox vs. Texas

1:10 p.m. Thursday, U.S. Cellular Field

As usual, the Sox are pulling out all the stops to get fans to attend games this week, whether it be fireworks, bands or activities to keep kids busy. And if you go on Thursday, you'll get to see Twista throw out the first pitch. Maybe if the crowd asks nicely enough, he'll rap the seventh-inning stretch!

WATCH

Cubs at Mets

Friday-Sunday, CSN or WGN

After the Cubs were walloped 17-1 last week against the Mets, it will be interesting to see if the Cubs can return the favor, if only to improve their psyches. Otherwise, tune in just to see if Anthony Rizzo keeps living up to the hype.

ATTEND

Fire vs. Los Angeles

2 p.m. Sunday, Toyota Park

This is the one chance for soccer fans—or fans of David Beckham and Landon Donovan—to see the Galaxy in Chicago. You might want to pay close attention to the Fire, too, as they've won three in a row heading into Tuesday's match at Houston.

ATTEND

Rush vs. San Antonio

3 p.m. Sunday, Allstate Arena

A playoff berth is still within the Rush's reach as they prepare for their final home game of the regular season. There are still a couple of months until the Bears play for keeps, so this might be the football fix you need.
