The West Loop will soon have not one, but two new Mexican spots to add to its growing restaurant roster. Zenba Mexican Grill (605 W. Lake St.) opened May 2, and Blue Agave Tequila Bar & Restaurant (555 W. Kinzie St.) – a second location of the Gold Coast spot with the same name – is scheduled to open in mid-June.

Expect traditional Mexican fare at Zenba: guacamole, enchiladas, fajitas, grilled skewers, and entrees such as carne asada and grilled blackened tilapia (nothing’s more than $15). The restaurant is BYOB and currently seats 37, and sidewalk seating opening next week near the Green/Pink Line tracks will accommodate another eight. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with Sunday service likely starting soon.

A few blocks north, Blue Agave is moving into a 6,000-square-foot space in K Station, a residential building. Owner Mario Gonzalez is calling this location “Blue Agave on steroids.” Inspired by a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, he’s decking the place out with custom-made decor, including tables and chairs from Mexico, and bringing a Mexican street food theme to the menu. Think tacos al pastor, tortas (sandwiches) and chicken fajitas with tamarind, as well as what he's calling “Mexican street cart margaritas” in three flavors: cucumber, avocado and tamarind. Some elements of both the decor and menu also will be incorporated into the existing Gold Coast location. Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
