Fest Fridays: Mole de Mayo, Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest and more

Fest it up for Memorial Day weekend

May 23, 2012|By Emily Van Zandt | RedEye

As if Memorial Day weekend weren't busy enough with the opening of patios, beer gardens and Chicago beaches, this weekend is also packed with fests. On Saturday and Sunday, you can opt for dancing in the Lakeview streets at the Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest or digging for buried (old) treasures at the first Randolph Street Market of the season. But for those seeking a full belly, there's no better place to be than Pilsen for Mole de Mayo, a party dedicated to good Mexican food, music and more.

Mole de Mayo

Time: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. May 26 and 27

Location: Peoria Street between 18th and 16th streets

Cost: Free

The name says it all: You won't want to hop back on the Pink Line until you've tried a few different types of mole, a savory sauce typically served over meat that can include a variety of chilies, spices, tomato and even chocolate. Restaurants including Fogata Village (1812 S. Ashland Ave.), Las Palmas (1835 W. North Ave.) and Decolores (1626 S. Halsted) will be serving up their mole recipes and other Mexican favorites all weekend.

Got luchadores?: Nope, you aren't seeing things. The Galli Luca Libre wrestlers (a.k.a. luchadores, those masked Mexican pro wrestlers) will perform matches Saturday from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday from 4-6 p.m.

Dance off those calories: Full from your third round of churros? Shake it off as DJs spin Latin rock and mariachi and folk artists perform throughout both days. Saturday's headliners include Chicago-based Sones de Mexico, a two-time Grammy-nominated Mexican folk group.
