Though chain stories have been closing in on Lincoln Park’s indie boutique scene over the years, the neighborhood’s surviving shops along Armitage Avenue and Halsted Street definitely are worth a visit. Get ready for a permanent sample sale, trendy jewelry and not one, but two design-your-own handbag shops, all on the same street.

Start at Armitage and Sheffield, where you can hop right off the Brown Line. Stop in custom leather handbag shop Laudi Vidni (that’s “individual” spelled backward; 1007 W. Armitage Ave. 773-697-7847) and Ralph Lauren store Rugby (1000 W. Armitage Ave. 773-525-4627) to channel that perfectly citified preppy look.

Head east and drool over unique jewelry, funky home accessories, trendy clothing and thoughtful gifts at Art Effect (934 W. Armitage Ave. 773-929-3600). Next, scour the racks at sample sale-style store Thread Lounge (918 W. Armitage Ave. 773-281-0011), design your own purse at 1154 Lill Studio (904 W. Armitage Ave. 773-477-5455) and browse lacy underthings at Isabella Fine Lingerie (840 W. Armitage Ave. 773-281-2352).

Continue your spree at women’s footwear mecca Lori’s Shoes (824 W. Armitage Ave. 773-281-5655), and then sift for designer treasures at consignment shop McShane’s Exchange (815 W. Armitage Ave. 773-525-0282). Don’t miss Cynthia Rowley (810 W. Armitage Ave. 773-528-6160), the eponymous shop of the quirky designer and Illinois native.

Round the corner onto Halsted to Francesca’s Collection (2012 N. Halsted St. 773-244-4075), known for its low-priced clothing and jewelry. Next door, the magenta storefront of Helen Ficalora (2014 N. Halsted St. 773-883-2014) stocks delicate charm jewelry that’s earned a loyal Hollywood following. Next, check out discount designer haven Fox’s (2150 N. Halsted St. 773-281-0700) before ending your
jaunt by browsing luxe cosmetics at Bluemercury (2208 N. Halsted St. 773-327-6900) and big-name denim at The Blues Jean Bar (2210 N. Halsted St. 773-248-5326).

Double back on Halsted and turn down tree-lined Webster Avenue, which isn’t as densely packed with shops but is still worth a stroll. First, you’ll pass Underthings (804 W. Webster Ave. 773-472-9291), a
tiny but mighty lingerie shop that’s packed to the brim with everything from cozy robes to lacy camisole sets.

At Erin Gallagher’s Gem Bar (1013 W. Webster Ave. 312-492-7548), browse display cases full of glittery accessories, or belly up to the gem bar to customize different styles of earrings, bracelets and necklaces with your choice of colorful jewels.

Down the block, The Left Bank Jewelry & Bridal Finery (1155 W. Webster Ave. 773-929-7422) is a lovely little Parisian-inspired boutique that’s fun to browse even if you’re not planning your nuptials.
