It seems the idea of a festival in May is just too much to contain to one weekend. Not to be confused with Lincoln Square’s Maifest (scheduled for May 31), this Mayfest aims to get Chicago festival season kicked off with all the classics: Street food, cover bands and plenty of beer.
What: Chicago Mayfest
Where: Lakeview, N. Ashland Avenue at Barry Avenue
Time: 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Cost: $10 suggested donation with a hand stamp for re-entry
Prepare to get cozy with a few of Chicago fest season’s busiest cover bands. Sixteen Candles serves as Friday’s headliner, hitting the stage at 7 p.m. On Saturday, you can check out Too White Crew at 5 p.m. and Hairbangers Ball at 8 p.m. Headliners for Sunday include Rod Tuffcurls at 5 p.m. and Mike & Joe at 8 p.m. The main stage is covered by a huge tent, so acts will go on rain or shine.
Food & drink:
Snack options range from hot dogs to Italian ice to gyros. You’ll never be far from a brew refill either—several locations will be serving up beer, including the concert tent. And if waiting in line isn’t your thing, you can upgrade to a spot in the “Star Lounge” for $25. The separate VIP area includes backstage concert access, separate restrooms and seating and an open beer bar.
Gone to the dogs: If you’re on the fence about adopting a new furry friend, be warned: The Higgins Animal Clinic is hosting a pet parade and expo on Sunday. Already have a dog or cat and want to show off? Bring them along to participate in contests for best-dressed pet, best trick and pets who look most like their owners. Registration runs from 11 a.m. until noon Sunday.
