Austin, Woodlawn record 2 homicides each

Austin and Woodlawn each saw two homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.

In Austin, a 26-year-old man was shot to death Monday in the 400 block of North Lawler Avenue, police said. A day before, a 21-year-old man was shot to death in the 5100 block of South Kinzie Street, officials said.

Austin has recorded nine homicides so far this year, according to RedEye data. The West Side community area logged 30 homicides in 2011, RedEye data shows.

In Woodlawn, a 21-year-old man was shot to death in the 6300 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, police said. Two days earlier, a man in his 20s was found strangled to death in the 6400 block of South Greenwood Avenue, according to officials.

Woodlawn has recorded eight homicides so far this year, RedEye data shows. The South Side community area logged 13 homicides in 2011, according to RedEye data.

Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in Beverly and Brighton Park, RedEye data found.

April ended this week with 40 homicides, up from 30 homicides recorded in April 2011, RedEye determined. No homicides have been recorded in May, as of presstime. Thirty-nine homicides were logged in May 2011.
