Englewood, North Lawndale see 2 homicides in 2 days

Englewood and North Lawndale each saw two homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.

In Englewood, a 28-year-old man was shot to death Sunday in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue, police said. One day earlier, a 2-year-old girl was beaten to death in the 5500 block of South Emerald Avenue, police said.

Englewood has recorded six homicides so far this year. The South Side community area logged 27 homicides last year, RedEye data shows.

Meanwhile, in North Lawndale, a 23-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday in the 1300 block of South Springfield Avenue, police said. One day earlier, a 21-year-old woman was shot to death in the 3900 block of West 19th Street, officials said.

North Lawndale has recorded seven homicides so far this year. The West Side community area logged 14 homicides last year, according to RedEye data.

Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in Austin, East Garfield Park, Grand Boulevard, Roseland, Washington Heights, West Englewood, West Garfield Park and Woodlawn, RedEye determined.

Twenty-three homicides have been recorded so far this month. Thirty homicides were logged in April 2011, according to RedEye data.
