Reminder: Street sweeping starts today

April 02, 2012|By Mick Swasko, RedEye

Check those trees and light poles, today marks the start of the citywide street sweeping season.

The city's Department of Streets and Sanitation will begin posting temporary signs the day before scheduled sweeping is to occur, letting motorists know when to keep their cars off the road. The department will continue the operations through the end of October.

In some cases, permanent signs mark dates and times for sweeping operations.

The city covered about 242,000 miles of roads during street sweeping last year. Street sweepers clear debris and dirt from the road to keep sewer systems clear for heavy rain and storms.
